Hi Catherine! Welcome to A Sustainable Closet! Can you please tell us more about yourself and your relationship with clothes?

Hi, I'm Catherine, a slow fashion/lifestyle content creator and advocate. I use my platform, @project.catherine to make you rethink your relationship with things, to minimise our shared environmental footprint on our beloved planet. Since launching my platform in 2020, I have cultivated a community comprising 21,000 slow fashion enthusiasts. I consistently motivate my audience to adopt outfit repeating and to support brands committed to sustainability and ethical work practices.

My bond with my clothing transcends time, as each piece is carefully chosen to be worn for years to come and, ideally, passed down through generations. Whether sourced from sustainable labels, discovered in thrift stores, or borrowed, my wardrobe reflects a commitment to conscious and enduring fashion choices.

Can you please tell us more about your background and what you do during the day?

Rooted in my background studying architecture, my love for fashion is fueled by a deep appreciation for the creative process. I am drawn to innovation and sustainability, cherishing the art of crafting aesthetically pleasing pieces designed to endure a lifetime. Although I've transitioned into a client-side project management role as my full-time job, collaborating with developers to bring projects to fruition, my connection with architects keeps me closely tied to the world of design and creation.

When did you get into sustainability and why?

My journey into sustainability was unplanned; I only realised I was inadvertently practising the principles of the slow fashion movement when I came across an article that resonated deeply with me. Since then, I've embraced a more sustainable lifestyle, finding joy in educating and inspiring others to join the cause of preserving our planet.

You have a good following on Instagram, what are your followers mostly interested in?

My community of slow fashion enthusiasts appreciates my sewing endeavors, thrift store discoveries, and eco-friendly tips, all aimed at improving our collective journey toward sustainable fashion.

How would you describe the sustainable fashion scene in Sydney, Australia?

Sydney's fashion scene spans a wide spectrum. While many still indulge in fast fashion or consume a lot of clothes, there's a growing community committed to second-hand shopping. Interestingly, I've noticed that the majority of sustainable fashion content creators are based in Melbourne or our neighbouring sister Country, New Zealand; yet to encounter another one right here in Sydney!

What are your best styling tips for those who need to activate their closet and be more creative with second-hand?

Blend the latest trends seamlessly into your current wardrobe – take the coquette trend, for instance. Instead of a complete wardrobe overhaul, integrate elements like tying a ribbon to your bag. Embrace trends you adore by shopping second-hand first

What do you think is needed to make the fashion industry more sustainable?

To achieve a more sustainable fashion industry, prioritise eco-friendly production, enhance supply chain transparency, support sustainable initiatives, and enforce regulatory policies. Educating stakeholders and consumers is crucial for fostering lasting change and promoting conscious choices in clothing.

Anything else you want to share?

Keep outfit repeating!!
