INTERVIEW #151 COURTNEY BLACKWELL

Name: Courtney Blackwell

Based in: New York

Hi Courtney, welcome to A Sustainable Closet. Can you please tell us about yourself?

I’m a vintage curator mule-obsessed girl! Louisiana-born but Brooklyn-raised at my big age. I’ve been wearing vintage since 2010 and now the world is finally catching on, thank the Lord!

What’s your relationship with clothes, when did you start to get interested?

I’ve always had a love for clothes from a young age. From wearing my grandma’s clip-on earrings and wigs to watching my aunt get dressed before going out.

When did you start to get interested in sustainability and why?

I got interested in sustainability in 2010 because I and my friends were “poor” college students! We would go to thrift stores and find oversized jeans to turn into shorts and colour lock button-downs. Honestly, best dress in the bars if you ask me.

How would you describe your closet?

My closet is small because you know I live in NY and they won’t let us live in a walk-in closet because the apt is just that! It really consists of mostly vintage and statement pieces (that I have no shoes for ). I’m currently into basic pieces that I can really switch and change to wear over and over again and no one would notice (or maybe they would but who cares)!

Do you have any favourite vintage items or memories you would like to share with us?

My fav vintage pieces I’ve sold and honestly wish I could get them back! I recently thrifted this vintage biker leather hat and ummm I’m obsessed!

How can one look more fashionable with vintage, do you have any styling tips?

As long as you dress for YOU and what feels great to you and wear it with confidence you’ll be able to pull off anything. “Fashion” is so fleeting and constantly changing so just do you! Although currently, I think we are all falling for the Sophia Richie vibes so maybe I’m not the right one to give advice!

What are among the most common questions you get when it comes to vintage and styling?

The most common questions I get are how do I part with the awesome things I find and what inspires me. Only one is easy to answer.

What can one do that seeks to create a more sustainable closet?

For someone whose always rebranding her look, I would say just be intentional when seeking to create a more sustainable closet! Also, start with basics, basics will take you a long way!
