Welcome to A Sustainable Closet, can you please tell us more about HALLA HALLA  and why did you start this brand?

We are a design duo who studied fashion design in Finland and always knew we wanted to do something unique. Halla Halla started from our shared passion for the ocean and ethically made sustainable swimwear. We spent many years in beautiful but cold Finland and then travelled the world to surf, enjoy the sun, and explore different cultures. We want to spread the sunshine and happiness we have gained from our experiences to different places around the world as well as to share our passion for sustainability and mind-blowing designs. This is how Halla Halla was born and we can proudly say we are the first sustainable swimwear brand in Finland.

What materials are you using and how come you are focusing on swimwear?

Our swimwear is made from regenerated nylon which is made by recovering nylon waste such as fishing nets from the oceans and aquaculture and other discarded waste. It is then manufactured into high-quality nylon material. For us, helping keep the oceans clean and seeing marine life thrive is close to our hearts.

Where are the products produced and how do you work to guarantee workers' rights?

All our items are manufactured ethically in the most magical island of Bali, at a local factory. We wanted to ensure that the factory we chose to produce our swimwear in matched our values. We researched several different options in Bali and hand-selected our factory due to their morally and ethically responsible and sustainable practices. We are super happy with the factory that we have worked with for years. We visit the factory on a regular basis and value the staff greatly. All our sewing staff are well-paid, and they work in good conditions. It is great that we can provide work for the local Balinese people: we love our Bali team!

What have been and are the major challenges with starting your own brand?

Yes, starting your own brand can present numerous challenges. We both are designers and didn’t realize how complex running a business is. You have to step into multiple roles, such as marketing, branding, product design, logistics, customer service, and financial management. We have learnt a lot during these past 7 years and now love every bit of it.

What have been and are the largest gains?

There are many potential gains from starting your own brand, both financial and non-financial. One of the biggest gains is the opportunity to connect with customers and build a loyal fan base. This has been so rewarding having so many beautiful souls loving our brand. We love our customers and have learned so much from our experiences and we continue to grow and evolve as a brand.

What do you think needs to change in the fashion industry to make it more sustainable?

There are a lot of things the fashion industry needs to focus on. But personally taking small steps to improve is a great way to make a difference.  First of all, we think a great way to start is to produce something from sustainable materials in a sustainable and ethical way. After that, it’s important to focus on producing just the right amount so no overproduction will occur. We are taking part in the Who made my clothes -a campaign to show our lovely customers more about what happens behind the scenes. So stay tuned!

How can one best take care of their bikinis and other swimwear?

Wear more, wash less! Rinse your swimwear immediately after use and do not leave it in direct sunlight to dry. Remove any sand or dirt as soon as possible and you will give your swimwear a happy long life!

What are customers’ favourite products and what do they say about you?

Our customers are always so surprised at how comfortable our suits are! They also think our swimwear is beautiful and unique and good quality fabric. The size matches well with the size guide and also very quick delivery! Our one pieces have been crazy bestsellers right now!

What's the plan for summer 2023?

Get ready to say Oh Hey Vacay and dive into the fun! New collection Oh hey Vacay launching soon!
