Pamela Anderson Partnership With RE/DONE

The iconic supermodel and actress Pamela Anderson has teamed up with fashion brand RE/DONE for a 25-piece sustainable collaboration. The collection pays homage to some of Anderson's most memorable '90s outfits and is called RE/DONE & Pam. The collection features a range of eco-conscious denim and apparel, including tees, bodysuits, cardigans, and classic denim pieces. As an advocate for environmental causes (at least animal welfare), one can wonder if Pamela Anderson's partnership with RE/DONE showcases her commitment to promoting sustainable fashion.

How responsible are RE/DONE?

RE/DONE started their upcycled journey in 2014 and has since then upcycled 200,000 pairs of jeans. In 2016, RE/DONE partnered with Champion to launch a capsule of crewnecks and hoodies upcycled from their vintage sweatshirts. In 2020, RE/DONE furthered its upcycled sweatshirt program to include reconstructed crewnecks with our best-selling graphics. T-shirts have also been produced with 30% recycled cotton. The 2016 initiative sold more than 120,000 t-shirts.

In early 2020, RE/DONE launched their second recycled t-shirt fabric, this time a 50% recycled polyester cotton blend. In 2021, RE/DONE launched two additional new recycled t-shirt fabrics; a variegated rib fabric composed of 47% pre-consumer recycled cotton, 47% organic cotton, and 6% spandex and a recycled jersey consisting of 50% pre-consumer recycled cotton and 50% post-consumer recycled polyester. In 2023, RE/DONE launched their most sustainable fabrics yet: a slinky rib constructed from low-impact Hemp, as well as an ultra-luxe 50% organic and 50% recycled cotton blend. In 2024, RE/DONE will launch their C4 Hanes fabric, which is woven from Cali-grown regenerative cotton.

In the Summer of 2021, RE/DONE launched their first-ever jeans made using recycled cotton for a collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. Since then, recycled cotton blends have been utilized in over half of the stretch styles, organic cotton denim in over half of the rigid styles, and 36% Lyocell (which uses less water) in the Flow fabric.

Further, RE/DONE has also launched upcycled vintage jackets, an online marketplace for second-hand items and has made efforts to reduce emissions and material use in shipping and packaging.

The listed factories used in Turkey and Mexico also include their environmental commitments and practices where several standards and certifications are followed.

On Good on You, the brand is not sufficient since it lacks information on the total material use and efforts to reduce textile waste, total climate emission reduction efforts and it lacks information on audits in the supply chain and workers’ ability to earn a living wage.

Is the RE/DONE & Pam collection sustainable?

While the collection is touted as eco-conscious, there remains a lack of detailed information regarding the extent to which it diverges from RE/DONE's overall production practices. Notably, the collection is entirely vegan, with leather details replaced by apple leather. Upon reviewing the collection items on their website, it becomes apparent that all pieces either incorporate upcycled materials, recycled components or utilize organic materials. Transitioning to a fully vegan collection sourced from 100% sustainable materials marks a commendable stride in the right direction. Nevertheless, RE/DONE still faces the imperative of instituting overarching improvements concerning working conditions and enhancing transparency within its supply chain. It's encouraging to see Pamela Anderson using her platform to advocate for a more conscientious choice, a level of engagement that exceeds the actions of many other celebrities.
