I love science and I love research. I just don’t want to assume what’s environmentally good consumption and production behaviour, I want to know the facts.
Did you know that to reuse textiles instead of recycling the material saves ten times more carbon? This is according to a study Avfall Sverige (the Swedish Waste Management Association) recently launched. An reused phone, instead of buying a recycled, saves 60 kilos CO2!
ILV (Swedish Environmental Research Institute) also launched a study (2013) in collaboration with Blocket (an online second hand market platform) about the carbon savings from the trade happening in 2012. The results showed that 1,6 million ton green house gases were saved in comparison if people instead would have chosen to buy new things (clothes, bikes, furniture, electronics you name it). The savings are equal to the traffic in Stockholm standing still for 1.2 years.
So don’t hesitate regarding the carbon footprint in case you need to go and get your second hand item by car, the climate benefits are higher!
